“ For I was a stranger and you invited me in…” Matt. 25

On Saturday, April 2, 2011, The Community Inn opened its doors to provide shelter, comfort, dignity and connection for men and women who have no place to call home. The Catholic Action Center and Emmanuel Apostolic Church are partnering to offer this shelter at EAC’s 824 Winchester Road location. Emmanuel Apostolic Church, under the leadership of Elder James McDonald has served the marginalized and homeless for 19 years in Lexington, Ky.; the Catholic Action Center is in its 11th year of offering a house of hospitality for these most marginalized and often invisible members of our community, including offering the Alltech WEG Shelter that housed 138 in 19 nights, with an average of 53 men and women per night. In order to serve this population to the fullest and to follow the command of Matthew 25, EAC and CAC have undertaken the creation of The Community Inn with the mission to further breakthrough the barriers encountered by those who call the streets of Lexington home. With the support of faith community and community volunteers, overnight shelter and hospitality will be provided at EAC’s location on Winchester Rd. for men and women as they work to put their lives back together. With the staffing of trained, scheduled volunteers and security, The Community Inn is open seven nights a week at 7:00pm to offer the hospitality and dignity of an air mattress with clean sheets, blankets, pillows; showers, storage of  belongings for the night, fellowship and outreach to the needs of the guests along with a safe place to sleep. Nightly from 7:30-9:00pm there will be classes and clinics offered: Bible Study classes, NA/AA meetings, medical clinics, legal clinics, employment clinics, Yoga, and computer classes offered by Lexington Public Library and various “special events“. These are scheduled weekly and offered for the guests as paths toward wholeness. Computers for job applications will also be available. Guests will be accepted throughout the night. At 8:00 am each morning, The Community Inn will close. The Catholic Action Center at 400 E. 5th St. will be open 8:00am-7:00pm daily.

With a safe, comfortable place for a good night’s sleep, connection to social services and progress toward wholeness: securing work, a place of their own and getting back on their feet will be within reach for many of our marginalized brothers and sisters.  The Catholic Action Center will continue to provide three meals a day, along with the other services of mail receipt, availability of phone service, showers, and fellowship as a house of hospitality from 8:00 am -7:00pm  seven days a week.
