About the Christmas Store: Since 1996, this "free store" has given families in need in our community a place to shop with dignity for gifts for their children: toys, games, books, and gifts donated by people of the community who do not want Christmas to be another day of going without for children who live in poverty. The Christmas season is often a time of great stress for parents, grandparents, and family members who cannot provide gifts for their children because they simply do not have enough money. The joyful Christmas season when the love and gift of the Christ Child is celebrated, becomes a time of depression and sadness for the families who feel their life in poverty: they do not have enough to celebrate, to share with their children the awe of Christmas morning. The Faith and Community Christmas Store began in 1996 to "fill in the gap" of the wonderful Christmas programs in our community. The Angel Tree, Toys for Tots and various church programs were overwhelmed by the number of families who could not be served by their programs: folks did not sign up in time, they didn't have the necessary paperwork, or they simply thought they were going to be able to provide Christmas, but when December came, their resources were not there. By collecting "pre-loved" toys and soliciting volunteers from the faith community, the Faith and Community Christmas Store began filling in the gap for those families. With the increased economic stress in 2008, we are concerned that the number of families who will need the Christmas Store will be greatly increased. The cost of groceries, gasoline, & utilities have increased and those families who have been barely "making it" will be forced to find another way to provide Christmas for their children. In 2007, 8,614 children were shopped for at the Store; 2008 numbers are expected to balloon. |
